A Community Fitness & Wellness Center
Savoy, Illinois
Savoy Recreation Center encompasses the spirit of communal gathering that was present in the existing church that preceded the Center on this site.
A new curvilinear roof structure literally enclosed the existing gabled church structure and allowed the reuse of the existing spaces within. The sanctuary was converted into a community meeting center. The other existing spaces provide offices, conference roons, and new bathing and locker facilities.
An addition, which includes a cardiovascular exercise room and a dance and aerobic room, extends the former church. A new gymnasium addition, complete with an elevated running track and mezzanine is connected to the former church structure. A reception and observation area has been carved out of the former church and provides a central control point for all activities.
The 6,000 SF former church space, included in the facility, was expanded to a total of 20,000 SF. The curved metal roof and the column arcades provide a unique appearance to the single story former church structure. Translucent panels provide diffused light into the gym and the exposed joists and mechanical systems reveal the dynamic structure of the facility.
Architectural services included schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration.
This project successfully serves the Village by creating a place that promotes community fitness, wellness, and social interaction. This place that once provided a place of neighborhood gathering continues to serve the community's needs in a new way.
